Community Development Websites
One of the newest trends in social work and community development is to bring things to a whole new level - the online level. On the Internet, communities are able to band together in ways that were never before possible. With an inherently open atmosphere, local residents can talk about and work on programs for community development and become an active participant in changing their own backyard and local neighborhood. As they have gotten popular, websites that focus on the needs of a specific community and their plans to reach their goals have attracted many local voices that are able to work together for the common good.
Urban planning is one area where the community development websites have proven to be an invaluable resource. Rather than arguing over plans in a crowded local room, all residents are able to have their say by weighing the issues and leaving their own personal opinion on a message board. In this manner, a real debate can take place with individual and community concerns placed as a high priority. Examples of urban planning projects that have been completed with the help of community development websites are parks, playgrounds, and roads, just to name a few.
On a smaller scale, community development websites are able to help in personal ways as well. To improve adult literacy, a tutor may be able to offer their expertise and work with local residents that are not able to read or write. Another example is found in the discussion boards.
