MacArthur Foundation Highlights NCP work in Little Village

In light of the significant national and international interest in the New Communities Program (NCP), the MacArthur Foundation retained Kartemquin Films, producer of “Hoop Dreams” (www.kartemquin.com) to develop a film on NCP.  Initially, producers were looking at several neighborhoods to feature, but decided to go deep rather than wide and highlight only one neighborhood.

Little Village Community Development Corporation and Local Initiative Support Corporation (LISC) are very proud to announce that La Villita was selected as the community through which the NCP story will be told.  Our neighborhood will serve as an example of what NCP can achieve and how it works.
Kartemquin Films is a home for independent filmmakers developing documentary as a vehicle to deepen our understanding of society through everyday human drama. Focusing on people whose lives are most directly affected by social and political change and who are often overlooked or misrepresented by the media, Kartemquin's films open up a dialogue, both in communities and between the general public and policymakers.
Kartemquin is examining the many rich stories within the neighborhood.  The film makers look at some of the larger issues at stake, including how a young, new generation of leadership came into being in Little Village, a neighborhood that already had a long tradition of community organizing.  The film covers a wide array of community issues addressed by programs run by LVCDC and its partners.
